The US House of Representatives impeached President Trump for inciting insurgency.
The resolution followed the debate on the indictment article.
Democrats in the House proposed the article of impeachment following the invasion of Capitol Hill during the certification of the 2020 presidential election on January 6.
Prior to the invasion, Trump, who has yet to concede the Nov. 3 election won by Joe Biden, addressed a rally of his supporters to “take back their country.”
According to US media reports, several Republicans have vowed to vote in favor of impeachment. Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney, the 3rd GOP leadership has promised to vote in favor of impeachment.
Leading the debate on behalf of the Republican Party, Jim Jordan of Ohio accused the radical left of seeking revenge.
Making the closing plea for the Republican Party, Minority Whip, Steve Scalise called on the other side to let the Nation heal, while paying tribute to the Capitol Police who lost two officers in the November 6 hearing. The tribute was greeted with applause from both sides.
“At times like this, let’s give in to our best side.” He said.
Closing the debate for the Democrats, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said that in light of the Civil War analogy with the events of November 6, the attack was summoned and ignited by the President of the States -United.
“We will stay silent, or we will stand up and say that is not acceptable. For 4 years, the president has not displayed the principle of the Republican Party. His actions have been rationalized by those who profit financially and politically from the proximity to power, ”he said, adding that“ we know Trump is not a patriot ”.
It should be remembered that President Trump was impeached in 2019 by the Democratic-led House, but was acquitted by the Republican-led Senate.
Impeachment is not removal from office until the US Senate votes to convict. However, the Senate is currently on hold and will not resume until Mr. Trump’s term ends in 7 days.
Impeachment implies that if the Senate were to condemn Trump, he would be barred from re-occupying political or elected office.
The Senate trial could take place even when Trump is no longer president.
Historically, Trump is the first US president to be impeached twice.
10 Republicans joined Democrats in impeaching Trump. At the time of filing this report, 229 lawmakers have decided to impeach Trump, 195 Republicans have voted against the article.
