Cape Town – A man from Brackenfell who allegedly assaulted and assaulted Mogamat Shaheed Samsodien on Christmas Day has been arrested.
Sean Mienie was released on warning following an early appearance at Kuilsriver Magistrates’ Court.
Mienie has been charged with common assault and is scheduled to appear again on February 11.
There was confusion over whether the media could be allowed to enter the courtroom and when it was finally decided to allow them, the case had already been heard and Mienie had left the building invisible.
Shaheed told the Daily voice that on December 25, he was on his way to his daughter’s house for a Christmas lunch when he witnessed an accident on Jakaranda Road, Protea Heights.
“I pulled out my phone to take pictures of the incident and this white man charged up to me and asked me to delete the pictures.”
The father of three said he was beaten and racially abused by the man: ‘He said’erase daai pic, play (that pic, thug)“. Then he dove into my vehicle to grab my phone.
“He started choking me when I threw the phone in the passenger seat, which fell between the seat and the passenger door, saying all the time ‘ek maak jou vrek, jou donnerse h **** t (I’m gonna kill you, damn it)“.
Shaheed said he did not attend court proceedings because he feared he would be targeted again.
“After consulting with my wife, I decided not to attend because I don’t feel safe.
“I’m not happy that he was released because he will continue to release it to others.
“He didn’t think about attacking me that day. He could have come up to me in a decent manner and asked to delete the photo. But it seems that is how he treats people of color.
