Efforts are underway to rescue a group of about 230 whales that have washed up on a beach in Tasmania.

The animals appear to be pilot whales and about half are thought to be dead.

Marine wildlife experts have begun planning operations to rescue the rest of the stranded mammals.

It’s unclear what caused the whales to strand at Macquarie harbour, but the area has seen massive strandings in recent years.
