Watch Sheryl Lee Ralph Give Jennifer Hudson a ‘Dreamgirls’ Tutorial

hot of her Emmy wins, Sheryl Lee Ralph dropped in on “The Jennifer Hudson Show” this week to make some “Dreamgirls” magic.

Long before her time on TBEN’s “Abbott Elementary,” Ralph was a hot item on Broadway, playing Deena Jones in 1981’s “Dreamgirls.” The musical was also pivotal for Hudson, who won an Oscar in 2007 for her portrayal of Effie White in the filming of the film.

“These women in the room, they weren’t singers – they were” singers“Honey,” Ralph said. “The building literally floated off the concrete, they were that amazing.”

When the show’s creative team asked Ralph to sing “something from church,” she chose “Ave Maria,” which got a muffled response.

“I think they were thinking a little more in the Baptist spirit,” she joked. “They didn’t know I was a little Episcopalian girl. So I sang my song and sat down.”

Moments later, Ralph requested Hudson to join her for an impromptu performance of the musical’s title song, along with a mini-recreation of the original choreography—feather boa and all.

Elsewhere in the interview, Ralph spoke of her goosebumps, including Emmy’s acceptance speech, noting that her win over a week later “still feels amazing.”

Of course, that didn’t mean Ralph showed up unprepared for the September 12 ceremony.

“Like many of you, I have been preparing a speech since I was 5 years old,” she said. “And when they called my name, everything went out of my head.”
