Weekly Shonen Jump’s Hiroyuki Nakano and Yuji Iwasaki Talk About ‘One Piece’ As It Hits Its 100th Volume

I started with Nakano and wondered what attracted him to work in manga in the first place.

“I’m from Fukui Prefecture, which, as far as Japan is concerned, is kind of in the middle of nowhere. As a child I was a voracious reader, and not just of manga. I could sit still for hours in the library, reading. My parents always said I was a pretty low maintenance kid.

“As far as I can remember, I remember having copies of doraemon. Later I remember the first manga I bought with my pocket money: Captain Tsubasa and Ultimate Muscle.

“I loved books, I applied for publishing jobs and luckily Shueisha accepted me. After my internship, I was assigned to Shonen Jump editorial staff. Out of all Shueisha’s publications, Weekly Shonen Jump was what I loved the most, and also the most I’d read up to that point, so I was delighted, but also felt the conviction to do everything I could to make the magazine even better. to make .

“An editor’s main job is to promote the growth of their manga artist and help them become a hit, but it’s not an easy job. It’s really heartbreaking to put everything you have into creating something that you think is great, only to have it fail and bring the serialization to an end.

“Of course it’s wonderful when a series you curated clicks with readers and gains popularity, both within Japan and on a global scale. I’ve had the privilege of attending events outside of Japan on several occasions, and it fills me with a sense of pride to see how popular Jump titles are, including the many fans who cosplay characters.”

“Simply put, I think it comes down to Eiichiro Oda’s desire to create something really entertaining, which is due to his passion and strength as a creator. Plus, I think its success can also be attributed to the fact that Oda has expanded the series’ readership over time by targeting younger kids primarily. There is also a lot that A piece pioneer in the world of manga, including the incredible composition of the art and story, full of foreshadowing that connects the plot from beginning to end. In a nutshell, I consider the essence of A piece to be a series that is exciting for anyone, at any time, to read.

To dive deeper One Piece’s editing process, I wanted to hear from Iwasaki and how he got into the part.

“In April 2020, I took over as editor of the manga. I remember feeling a strange mixture of excitement that I got to work on A piecea series I’ve loved since I was a kid, along with a sense of responsibility for the series going forward.

“I think most of One Piece’s success is Oda’s childish curiosity. It’s like he constantly has his antenna up in search of inspiration. I think it’s an incredible achievement that he manages to weave so many playful aspects into such an epic storyline.

“It’s hard to always look from the reader’s perspective. A piece is the type of series where the deeper you go into it, the more fun it gets. However, A piece has both casual and hardcore fans, so accessibility is always a priority for me.”

“Overall, it was an incredible experience to see the world’s greatest manga artist hard at work, up close and personal. I hope to use all the things I learned from working with Oda to help the next generation of manga artists achieve everything they are capable of.
