The India-made Volkswagen Taigun was nominated in two categories at this year’s World Car Awards. The first category is the coveted World Car of the Year title and the second is the Global Urban Car of the Year award.
Volkswagen Taigun is built on India-specific MQB A0 IN platform
The road to the 2022 World Car Awards has started and, as you all know, the first step is to identify the nominees in different categories. Now the made in India Volkswagen Taigun has been nominated in two categories in this edition. The first category is the coveted World Car of the Year title and the second is the Global Urban Car of the Year award. The Volkswagen Taigun SUV will be launched in India tomorrow and promises to be good value for money. The Taigun is built on the India-specific MQB A0 IN platform and comes with over 93% location content which also means it will be very competitively priced.

While the list of nominees for World Car of the Year is long, the Taigun finds its place there and, in fact, it also owns the VW Taos which is made in Mexico. But the main fight for the Taigun will take place in the World Urban Car of the Year space, as this is where its value for money and even its handling in the city will earn it points. However, there are strong competitors in this category and it includes the Citroën C3, Dacia Sandero, Toyota Yaris Cross and another model made in India – the Renault Kiger.

The Taigun is Volkswagen’s first product in the compact SUV space and yes, it is a gasoline-only model. The company offers two engine options with the Taigun – the 1-liter and the 1.5-liter – both of which are turbocharged. The 1-liter TSI is tuned to produce 113 hp and 175 Nm of torque and is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox and an optional six-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The 1.5-liter four-cylinder TSI unit develops 148 hp and 250 Nm of torque, while paired with a six-speed manual gearbox and a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission.
